Hello, I'm new to this tribe!
I'm not sure I'd describe myself as pedantic exactly
but I am a student and I have a question.
Is there any technique that beats (or compliments!) the Notecard System?
I'm trying to attack, to subdue, to seduce new knowledge into my tightly packed brain.
I'm using a wide variety of techniques
but the best method I've come across, the only method really,
are notecards.
I love 'em.
I've got multiple piles each half a foot thick, and I work the **** out of them!
Putting missed cards two cards deep to keep the answer reasonably fresh.
Keeping them 'at the ready' wherever I go.
Still, I feel there are techniques I'm missing out on.
Angles that I'm not familiar with.
Any tips or useful advice from the Pedantic Peoples of this most wonderous Tribe?
thanx in advance!
Be Well,
Ben

Re: Generic "Study Tips" Question from someone new to the Tribe.
Mon, June 11, 2007 - 2:21 PMwhat are you studying? It seems different approaches might work for different fields of study ... I know what works for a Rhetoric major, but it's not notecards! :) -

I just remembered: some texts come with CD Roms, or links to web-sites that offer interactive lessons, self-tests, etc. Also, ask your professors if they can recommend anything in particular, either a work-book they have successfully used in the past, or a study technique that has worked wonders.
Sometimes we have discussion groups outside of class for particularly difficult readings we might have, so we can be sure we have a handle on the important concepts before we actually have to face the professor and talk like we know what the hell we're talking about ...
Another studying trick I use is to make outlines of the chapters I read - kind of like doing a reverse research paper - I take apart what the writer wrote, and just set up the main points and arguments. A tremendous amount of seemingly complicated readings are really pretty basic ideas: it's just the argumentative and supportive elements that can bog you down, especially if the writer isn't very good at being succinct.
Finally - sometimes it's useful to try and explain complicated ideas/theories to another person (you might have to bribe him or her with dinner, however) - if you can successfully explain ideas to a person who has no knowledge of the topic whatsoever, then you're golden!

Re: Generic "Study Tips" Question from someone new to the Tribe.
Mon, June 11, 2007 - 3:22 PMYeah, I think it depends on what you're studying. Notecards really don't work well for, say, history (unless you're an old schooler who only needs names dates and places).
I'm a fan of the teaching method, myself. I know I remember things much better when I teach them outloud, when I talk about them, when I roll them around with people who aren't as versed in the subject as I am, and I have to explain my knowledge.
Another method I use is the book review. Write them, find others of the same book, keep 'em together, write one "comprehensive" review and carry it with you (I have a whole shelf of 3 ring binders filled with 'em) -

Re: Generic "Study Tips" Question from someone new to the Tribe.
Mon, June 11, 2007 - 10:53 PMwonderful...wonderful.
(scribbling madly)
Yes, I suppose it really does matter that I'm studying Biology!
Lots of tiny bits to digest and reassemble and branch off on.
But I loved the idea of re-writing the chapters and also explaining it to people the general concepts...though you're right it would take a special kind of person to listen to me spout off about Adenosine Triphosphate and The Calvin Cycle Etc. Gee maybe they have a Tribe for that? The Teach-Me-Something-New Tribe!
Anyways,
Thanks!
